Utah Race Fans Experience the Best of Both Tracks at Horsepower Heaven
Rocky Mountain Raceways, an ASA & IHRA member track, had a full night of oval and drag racing on tap for Utah fans at Horsepower Heaven Saturday, May 12. Fans were on the edge of their seats as the Winged Sprints made their much anticipated return to the America First Credit Union ASA Super Oval while Jet Dragsters made their first pass of the 2012 IHRA racing season.
#80 Mike Murgoitio from Meridian, Idaho made quick work of dominating the Winged Sprints; moving from a seventh place start to second place in only the first lap. Murgoitio sliced through the turns with finesse and speed claiming the victory in a green, white, checker finish. Murgoitio set a new Rocky Mountain Raceways record of 12.654 in lap 2 of qualifying. “I have the best crew in the world, everyone is in sync,” say Murgoitio of his winning race. “I love coming to Rocky Mountain Raceways, this is an awesome track with great fans.”
The Winged Sprints will be returning to Rocky Mountain Raceways on Monday, May 28 as part of The Northwest Asphalt Speedweek. The Speedweek will kick off at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho on Saturday, May 26, it will then make a stop at Rocky Mountain Raceways on May 28th and then continue on to Meridian Speedway in Meridian, Idaho for racing on Wednesday, May 30 and June 1-2.
Fans concluded the night of racing on the IHRA ¼ Mile Drag Strip where Brett Harris also broke a Rocky Mountain Raceways record; running 5.778 in his Nitro Thunder Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragster.
Horsepower Heaven was a new event for Rocky Mountain Raceways, running the America First Credit Union ASA Super Oval and IHRA ¼ Mile Drag Strip on the same night. “The goal of our facility is to provide a unique entertainment experience for our race fans. I think that we succeeded in that endeavor tonight. The Winged Sprints were incredible in their return. The ASA Pro Race Trucks were great, and the drag strip action was stellar,” says Mike Eames, Rocky Mountain Raceways General Manager. “Watching Brett Harris in the Nitro Thunder Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragster run 5.77 at over 244 miles an hour, followed by Darin Bay’s two Jet cars both running quicker than 265 miles per hour capped the night off the right way.”
ASA Oval racing will continue on Saturday, May 19 with a Maverik Modified, Double Main, Super Stocks, Figure-8 Cars and Mini Cups. IHRA Drag Racing will return Friday, May 25 for Summit SuperSeries racing and Jet Car Spring Nationals on Saturday, May 26.
