As summer downshifts into fall here at Rocky Mountain Raceways, we are excited to wrap up our 20th anniversary season with the RMR Oval Championships, a two-night event that will put a fine point on the 2016 point standings.
This year’s event will take place over consecutive Saturdays on the America First Credit Union Super Oval; Night 1 Oct. 1, and Nigh 2 on Oct. 8. Saturday’s event, presented by Promotional Products Unlimited, will feature six racing classes: Maverik Modifieds, K1 Speed Super Stocks, Mini Cups, Pro 4 Bangers, Jr. Stingers and Brandon Park Roofing Trains.
Night 2 will feature five classes: Shoq Wave Late Models, University Federal Credit Union Sprints, Midgets, Sommer’s Auto Wrecking Hornets and Tucker Towing Double Deckers.
Going into the University Federal Credit Union Sprint Cars in action.ships, some of the point standing leaders have comfortable leads. The most glaring example of this is in the K1 Speed Super Stocks, where two-time reigning champion Tim Fahrner has a lead of over 100 points. By comparison, however, the space between first and second place in other classes is minuscule. For example, in the Shoq Wave Late Models, veteran racers Lynn Hardy and Jimmy Waters are separated by only two points.
Tonight’s Maverik Modified race will pit leader and two-time defending champion Mark Ith Jr. vs. Hardy. Ith Jr. has a good lead – 35 points – but it is not insurmountable if Hardy puts together a strong race.
Another race to keep an eye on is in the Mini Cups class, where Donny Sevey leads his son, Skylar, by just six points. And sitting in third is Kevin Neff, who sits just eight points away from the top spot.
